Notice to Community
To: ʔaq̓am Community
Our shared qanikitȼi—our values and principles – are a part of what has always made up the distinctive culture of ʔaq̓amnik. We put family first. We come together in unity and co-operation to provide support when a family is in need. Our qanikitȼi requires us to be inclusive and to support one another in healthy and balanced living by coming together to practice our traditional ways and engage in ceremony during funerals and burials. At the same time, we must also ensure safety and security for our community.
We show support and respect for one another and for those who pass away by showing up to funerals and burials free of illicit substances and alcohol and wearing attire that is respectful to our loved ones and our community. By doing this, we are 100% spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally present for the family members, friends, and community. We can then grieve together in our traditional ways, and fully engage in ceremony that honors those who have passed away.
As such, in accordance with our shared qanikitȼi during funeral and burial procedures we forbid the usage of illicit substances, alcohol, and the wearing and display of gang insignia and colors both on ʔaq̓am ʔamak and at any location where ʔaq̓amnik gather to grieve in our traditional ways and engage in ceremony around the loss of our loved ones.
We remain open to all who will come to pay their respects at this time.
Sincerely,
ʔaq̓am Nasuʔkin and Council
